The excellent remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is available worldwide starting today. Its success is already no mystery: stores are being swamped by fans, and the gaming press has awarded it an excellent score of 96 on MetaCritic and 95 on OpenCritic. These are, in fact, the highest scores of 2026.
In an interview with IGN, the producers of the Zelda franchise, Eiji Aonuma and Hidemaro Fujibayashi, revealed some interesting details about the game.
"It's hard to say exactly when the decision was made to remake Ocarina of Time in this way. I believe it was after development on Tears of Kingdoms had wrapped up, when team members began being assigned to other projects, that we started discussing the 40th anniversary and the best way to celebrate it."
Development reportedly began in 2023 following the release of the previous installment, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. They also mentioned that the decision to remake this title might be a brilliant idea, as it serves as the entry point into the franchise for many fans.
"As we discussed this and looked back on the evolution of the Zelda franchise over the years, we noted that Ocarina of Time served as an excellent starting point for many players—and as my own professional starting point within the series."
It’s also worth noting that a live-action film is scheduled for release next year.
