Gears of War: E-Day sold only 230,000 copies... but was a huge hit on the XBOX Game Pass

About a week before its release, Gears of War: E-Day had only reached about 120,000 pre-orders on Steam. This is a relatively low figure that didn’t improve much following the game’s launch.

Rhys Elliott of Alinea Analytics revealed in a recent report that The Coalition’s title sold 230,000 copies worldwide. That breaks down to 168,000 copies on Steam versus just 62,000 on XBOX (consoles and PC).

The study does, however, show that XBOX Game Pass has largely overtaken direct sales. That's right, 1.7 million players tried Gears of War: E-Day through their subscription. Of this total, 722,000 users reportedly paid an additional €30 to purchase the « Premium Upgrade » to play five days early and receive bonuses.

As a result, revenue generated on XBOX accounts for 74.6%, compared to 25.4% for Steam.
