Sony is being sued by a production company named... Stellarblade
, by Thibaut
Available since last April as a PS5 exclusive, Stellar Blade was quite the success. That said, almost six months later, Sony and Shift Up find themselves being sued.
This was lodged by a Louisiana-based film production company called Stellarblade. The company is accusing the Japanese company of trademark infringement, and believes that the game has **damaged its business"*.
According to the IGN website, which was able to consult the complaint document, it was filed this month and targets Shift Up, Sony and an unnamed insurance company covering the Japanese firm.
Stellarblade LLC has been in existence since 2010, and its mission is to provide "multimedia entertainment services" in the context of films, documentaries and commercials. Meanwhile, the game Stellar Blade has only existed since 2022, since it was known before that as Project Eve.
Griffith Chambers Mehaffey, head of the production company, is asking Sony to stop using the name “Stellar Blade”, and would like to recover and destroy all documents bearing this reference. Mehaffey adds that his customers are now finding it difficult to find Stellarblade on the Internet, since it's the Shift Up video game that is highlighted on search engines. The principal had registered the trademark in June 2023 before sending a cease and desist letter to Shift Up the following month.
Finally, Griffith Chambers Mehaffey is also seeking compensation for damages and legal fees.
