PlayStation announces 900 redundancies and the closure of its London studio
, by Thibaut
After Xbox and its 1,900 redundancies, it's PlayStation's turn to cut hundreds of jobs worldwide.
Jim Ryan, the current CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, who will be stepping down next month, confirmed the news in a press release. We learn that the Japanese company will be shedding 900 people, which represents approximately 8% of its worldwide workforce.
As for the repercussions of these dismissals, we learn that Sony intends to close PlayStation London Studio, the responsible for titles such as Eyepet, Singstar, Wonderbook and Blood and Truth. Since these developers were mainly focused on producing VR games, this can be seen as a kind of disavowal for PS VR2, which the manufacturer has said little about since its release.
Jim Ryan makes it clear that these "decisions are very difficult". Other PlayStation Studios will also be affected, such as Firesprite Studio, Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games and Guerrilla Games.
