The South of Midnight creative director says he wouldn't have funded the game

Now independent, Compulsion Games is going through a period of transition. The studio has managed to reclaim the South of Midnight franchise and will likely need to find success with its next project to ensure its survival.
In an interview with MinnMax, David Sears, the creative director of South of Midnight, admitted that such a game was absolutely not viable due to its substantial budget. He acknowledged that without Microsoft, development would have been impossible. But that’s not all...
Later in the interview, Sears acknowledged that if he had been part of Xbox’s management, he would never have given the green light to launch such a production.
"Yeah. I mean, I wanted to make it, no doubt, right? And obviously because we made it. You know, would I have turned off, you know, someone else's money flow before South Midnight? Yeah, cuz, I'm not completely selfless. But, you know, it it just seems like in hindsight at least, it was unsustainable. So, of course, it was going to have a, you know, shocking outcome."
The budget for South of Midnight is estimated at $100 million. While we don’t know the game’s actual sales figures, we do know that it had surpassed one million players about a month after its launch. This was largely thanks to Game Pass.
