John Romero confirms that his FPS, canceled by Xbox, has found a publisher

In July 2025, Xbox decided to cut funding for a game in development at Romero Games. Despite this setback, the Irish company did not shut down and even managed to save this FPS, which remains unknown to this day.

At Gamescom Asia, John Romero reconfirmed that development is continuing. The co-creator of DOOM and Quake also noted that a new publisher has been found. We don’t know who that might be just yet. Better yet, employees who were laid off over a year ago due to Xbox’s withdrawal have been rehired. The team had shrunk from 110 people to just five in a matter of weeks.

"You know, last year we basically got defunded, like a lot of people did,” Romero told us, “and so we had to spend time figuring out what we were going to do.

Eventually we decided that we can’t keep everybody on forever, and we kept them on as long as we could, trying to find funding to finish the game, keep everybody there, but as time goes on and people leave you can’t build that game again.

I just contacted somebody that I knew, and we basically did a deal, and so we have a new publisher. Can’t say anything about who it is, or when the announce is, or any of that stuff."

Currently, about fifteen developers are working on this game. It has therefore been redesigned to accommodate the team’s much smaller size. Some content has likely been cut, and certain ambitions scaled back.
