In the U.S., the PS5 has already outperformed the PS3 and PS4

Despite its very high price and Sony’s recent, somewhat questionable strategic decisions, the PS5 is still selling relatively well. The latest data provided by Mat Piscatella of Circana confirms the console’s success.
In the United States, after 71 months on the market, the PS5 has sold 40% more than the PS3 and 1% more than the PS4 did during their respective time periods. However, cumulative PS5 sales in 2026 (from January through September) are 4% lower than those of the PS3 in 2012 and 3% lower than those of the PS4 in 2019.
The picture is quite different for Microsoft, as over their first 71 months, the XBOX Series consoles are 35% behind the XBOX 360 and 28% behind the Xbox One. In the seventh year of the consoles’ lifespans (in 2026), Xbox Series sales are approximately 81% lower than those of the XBOX 360 in 2011 and 45% lower than those of the XBOX One in 2019.
