Yes, the long-awaited Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still making headlines! Although it was officially announced at E3 2017, the game still hasn’t made it into our hands. Almost ten years later, Ubisoft remains silent and rarely mentions this project, which was highly anticipated.
In an article published by the website Origami, we learn more about the game’s current status. It may come as a surprise, but Beyond Good & Evil 2 is reportedly still in the pre-production phase. The team, which reportedly consists of at least 250 people, is said to be on the verge of presenting a proof-of-concept demo to Ubisoft. The goal is to secure more resources so they can fully launch development. This is a crucial stage that the game has consistently failed to reach in the past, due to constant changes in direction.
Between 2019 and 2022, Beyond Good & Evil 2 was conceived as a primarily multiplayer title. It was intended to let players explore dozens of planets in a connected environment reminiscent of Fortnite and Destiny. Activities were to be generated specifically for users; there were no plans for quests or missions.
Now, Ubisoft has reportedly opted for an approach emphasizing a story-driven single-player experience without a mandatory online connection. A cooperative mode is still on the table, however. Origami notes that "its combat is very reminiscent of Insomniac’s Spider-Man games."
Finally, there remains a great deal of uncertainty regarding the project’s overall vision and its future. In the midst of restructuring, the French publisher could very well cancel Beyond Good & Evil 2 overnight.
