After Dune: Awakening's console release, Funcom is laying off part of its staff
, by Thibaut
This September 22, Funcom released Dune: Awakening on XBOX Series and PS5. After successfully launching the game, the Norwegian studio decided to restructure its teams.
Now that the game has adopted a GAAS model, Funcom no longer needs its entire workforce to develop new content. As a result, layoffs have taken place. Additionally, Scott Junior has been named CEO of the company. He succeeds Rui Casais, who had been with the company for 22 years. Casais issued a statement.
"Dune: Awakening has been the biggest project we have ever undertaken, requiring many years of significant development resources across our studios. Moving from full production into long-term post-launch development and operations requires a different organization.
While we would have wanted everyone who helped build Dune: Awakening to continue with us, we cannot sustain the size and structure required during peak development as we move into this next phase. My focus now is ensuring the process is as supportive as possible for everyone affected, and to treat our colleagues with the respect and transparency they deserve."
The future of Dune: Awakening and Conan Exiles, the studio's other game, is secure. Funcom aims to "support, develop, and grow these games and their communities for years to come."
