Nintendo may only recover $30,000 in the lawsuit against Palworld
, by Thibaut
Pocketpair barely flinched in the face of Nintendo. Back in 2024, the Japanese giant and The Pokémon Company sued the creators of Palworld for allegedly infringing on three patents related to capturing monsters in a video game.
Initially, Nintendo sought to have the release of Palworld blocked. In response, Pocketpair made changes to its game regarding the summoning of Pals. The lawsuit then became virtually moot, as it only concerned older versions of the game and the Japanese market.
According to Gamesfray, the verdict will be handed down on November 9, 2026. Furthermore, given all the limitations, even if Nintendo were to win (which is far from certain), it could only recover 5 million yen, or just under $30,000. Additionally, the request to have Palworld removed from sale worldwide no longer stands a chance of succeeding.
"This litigation is no longer aobut anything serious in commercial terms. It’s about a hypothetical injunction that doesn’t apply to current product versions and (if anything) a small damages award for a period during which Pocketpair generated limited new sales in Japan."
Palworld will release version 1.0 on July 10.
