Square Enix considered Final Fantasy XVI for PS4
, by Thibaut
Come June 22, players will be able to enjoy the vast world of Valisthea on Final Fantasy XVI, the latest PS5 exclusive. The title promises to be the franchise’s most mature story to date, with a wealth of content to enjoy over dozens of hours of playtime.
It’s no doubt that Square Enix has taken its time with the development of the sixteenth entry on the franchise, and the Japanese publisher is confident in the experience. They believe the game is so complete that no DLC is planned for the time being. Naoki Yoshida has also revealed one of the reasons that has allowed the development to go as smoothly as possible.
It seems that, in the initial stages of development, a PS4 version of the title was planned. However, it was quickly dropped as it would have required too much work in terms of optimization.
“What I can say is that while developing, we originally had a plan to release the game on PlayStation 4 possibly. During development, we realized that to get it to a level that we were gonna be proud of we would have needed at least one or two more years of development. And so I had to make a decision at that time. It’s like, okay, we don’t want to extend it that long. Let’s go PS5 only.”
