Overwatch 2: Blizzard confirms cancellation of co-op PvE story mode
, by Thibaut
The disappointment within the Overwatch community is significant. With the announcement of the sequel during BlizzCon 2019, Blizzard confirmed the development of a cooperative Player versus Environment (PvE) story mode. It was supposed to offer an exciting narrative experience with the game's highly charismatic characters.
However, during a livestream outlining the roadmap for Overwatch 2 in the coming months, the American studio announced a major upheaval in its plans. In the end, the highly anticipated story mode will be replaced by a series of simple missions and events. Farewell to the narrative threads that were meant to enrich the game's universe.
Here is Blizzard's justification:
*"The development of the PvE experience has not progressed as we had hoped. The team has created a lot of extraordinary content: exciting missions, incredibly fun new enemies to fight, and absolutely amazing hero abilities.
Unfortunately, the effort required to bring all of this together into a high-quality experience is enormous, and there is no clear end in sight or a defined date at which we could make it available to players.
Based on everything we have learned about what it takes to deliver the game at the level you deserve, it is clear that we cannot achieve the original vision for the PvE mode that was shown in 2019.
This means that we will not be offering a dedicated hero mode with talent trees or long-term power progression. These things are simply no longer part of our plans."*
