Ubisoft reiterates its policy on digital games following the closure of The Crew
, by Thibaut
Last November, a few gamers filed a class action lawsuit against Ubisoft following the closure of The Crew servers, which rendered the game unplayable.
To put the story in context, the complaint accused the publisher of deceiving consumers into believing that they owned the game. Ubisoft retorted at the time that it had only sold a license key for the game, and has maintained its position to this day.
The multinational is now seeking to have the case dismissed before a Californian court. In a document made available to the Polygon website, Ubisoft argues that "customers received the benefit of their purchase and were explicitly informed at the time of purchase that they were purchasing a license".
For its part, the class action is trying to rely on a California law that stipulates that gift cards are not allowed to expire. Since The Crew is no longer playable, users have lost access to the virtual currency they had before the servers closed. This could be a violation of the law.
We should have a first verdict by April 29, 2025.
