Minecraft won't go free-to-play

Minecraft is fifteen years old now, and has gone to become a veritable cultural phenomenon. So much so that, in fact, a film of it is coming to cinemas next week.

As for the video game, there are several new features coming soon, including a major visual overhaul. As for the business model for the title, Mojang just keeps getting messages about Minecraft going free-to-play.

In an interview with IGN, executive producer Ingela Garneij dismissed the possibility.

"Yeah, it doesn't really work with the way we built it."

"I mean we built the game for a different purpose. So monetization doesn't work in that way for us. It's a purchase of the game and then that's it. For us it's important that our game is available for as many people as possible. And so I think that's a very core value that it should be accessible for everyone. It's the best deal in the world."
