Bungie latest layoffs were decided in early 2024

We now know a little more about the recent redundancies announced by Bungie. Keep in mind that 220 people lost their jobs and 230 were transferred to Sony.

Journalist Stephen Totilo has contacted three different sources who claim that this was decided at the beginning of the year. At the time, Bungie had missed several of Sony's financial objectives and was bleeding a lot of money. There was absolutely no way of going back on this decision, even though The Final Shape expansion for Destiny 2 has been a huge commercial success.

Journalist Jason Schreier has also explained that the game codenamed Payback ended up being cancelled. However, it wasn't Destiny 3 as many claimed, but rather a spin-off whose development never really got off the ground.

Just to clear up some rumors floating around, Destiny 3 was not canceled because it was never in development, per people familiar. Bungie did some very early work on a spinoff project called Payback, but they canceled that a while ago. I'll have a story tomorrow with more info
