Bungie lays off 220 staff and announces a new game in a sci-fi universe

Today's a dark day for Bungie. The studio responsible for Destiny has just announced the lay-off of 202 of its current 1,300 workforce, which represents around 17% of its workforce. In any case, this decision affects the company at all levels, including management and executive positions.

In addition, Bungie will strengthen its integration with Sony Interactive Entertainment. The Japanese company acquired the studio in January 2022, and 155 of Bungie's positions (12% of the teams) will be integrated into PlayStation over the next months.

The company has also announced a new action game set in a science-fantasy universe. Bungie will also create a new studio by migrating an additional 75 workers to PlayStation Studios. Still, work on Destiny 2 and Marathon will continue.

To explain these changes, Bungie cites its excessive rapid expansion, which has "ran headlong into a broad economic slowdown, a sharp downturn in the games industry" and the questionable quality of the Lightfall expansion for Destiny 2.

Once this restructuring plan is over, Bungie will have 850 working on the projects in development.
