Video game actors go on strike that could impact future releases
, by Thibaut
It was on Friday July 26 that a historic strike began in the video game industry. American actors belonging to the SAG-AFTRA union have decided to stop working altogether for an indefinite period of time.
They do so to denounce the use of AI in game development, which in turn has a direct impact on job offers in the sector. SAG-AFTRA has decided to withdraw from negotiations underway since October 2022, with several companies such as Take-Two, Epic Games, Warner bros. Games and Activision, which won't get to hire actors during the strick.
As a result, it's going to be pretty difficult for these companies to carry out any motion capture work or record voice-overs. Various projects could end up being affected and have their release date delayed.
Audrey Cooling, spokeswoman for the video game producers who signed the Interactive Media Agreement, regretted SAG-AFTRA's withdrawal, pointing out that they were "close" to a deal, and that they had found "common ground on 24 out of 25 proposals", including AI protection, wage increases and fair compensation.
However, SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher wasn't so positive about it.
"We’re not going to consent to a contract that allows companies to abuse A.I. to the detriment of our members. Enough is enough. When these companies get serious about offering an agreement our members can live — and work — with, we will be here, ready to negotiate."
