Naughty Dog originally intended The Last of Us Part II to be an open world inspired by Bloodborne

As we all know, a game can change a lot over the course of its development, and that's what happened to The Last of Us Part II.

In the making-of of the second game, Anthony Newman (the co-director) revealed that The Last of Us Part II was initially "purely melee focused" and was to have an extremely vast open world.

"For the first four or five months, the game was kind of an open world inspired by Bloodborne. And it was purely melee focused, like it was all hand-to-hand combat."

Of course, the end result was very different. Newman simply explained that "the open world thing didn't work with the story we were trying to tell ".
