Odyssey, Blizzard's survival game, has been cancelled due to engine problems
, by Thibaut
The announcement of layoffs at Microsoft was accompanied by that of the cancellation of Odyssey, Blizzard's AAA survival game. The game had been in development for over six years.
In an article, Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier explains the reasons for the cancellation and points to the game's engine, Synapse, as the main culprit.
It should be noted that Synapse is an in-house engine designed primarily for mobile devices. At first, the developers wanted to use the Unreal Engine, but shareholders insisted on imposing Synapse, which led to numerous technical problems.
This problem, coupled with a generally chaotic production schedule, prompted Microsoft to cancel the project altogether.
