French competition authority fines Sony 13.5 million euros
, by Thibaut
On December 20, the French Competition Authority imposed a fine of 13.5 million euros on the Japanese giant. The French regulator's decision was prompted by Sony's "dominant" position in the supply of third-party controllers for the PS4.
In its report, the entity denounced the deployment of a technical countermeasure system in 2015. This affected the proper functioning of third-party controllers, which suffered disconnections during console system updates.
The regulator also points the finger at Sony's lack of transparency regarding the criteria for access to the OLP program. This program enables brands to obtain an official license to market their controllers for the PS4.
The penalty of 13,527,000 euros was imposed on Sony's parent company and three of its subsidiaries.
