Anthropic has blocked the cloning and reverse engineering of video games through Claude
, by Thibaut
Anthropic has just imposed a drastic restriction on its agent-based AI software, Claude. Specifically, the Claude Code and/or Opus 5.5 versions now appear to block reverse engineering, including attempts carried out using the Reverse Engineer Anything (REA) tool.
By preventing users from "recreating a specific existing game," Anthropic aims to curb the proliferation of clones and pirated games created using artificial intelligence. While unofficial ports of PC games may be affected by this restriction, the goal is also to put an end to the extortion attempts that some developers have been subjected to. Indeed, unscrupulous internet users were threatening to clone entire games using Claude.
Unfortunately, some developers are also criticizing this change, arguing that it would prevent Claude from performing legitimate tasks such as reverse engineering, crash analysis, debugging, and the development of anti-cheat solutions. It seems the AI is unable to distinguish between legitimate and prohibited actions.
Anthropic has stated that it intends to refine these restrictions.
