The Skyblivion project faces legal threats from a former volunteer
, by Thibaut
Scheduled for release later this year, it’s unclear whether Skyblivion will achieve its goal. The free mod, which aims to recreate The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion using the Skyrim engine, now faces a new obstacle.
In a statement, the project’s creators announced that they are facing legal threats from a former volunteer. Shortly after leaving the team, the individual in question threatened to sue over the use of code he had provided as part of his work on Skyblivion. The developers had intended to decompile part of it to fix bugs. The threats of legal action then intensified, with demands to obtain the real names and personal addresses of the project leaders.
To calm the situation and avoid putting too much pressure on the volunteers, the leaders decided to remove the code and rebuild each system from scratch. Unfortunately, the threats have reportedly not subsided as a result. Finally, the Skyblivion team says it is doing everything it can to continue its efforts until the mod’s release and asks its community not to launch a witch hunt against the former volunteer.
