Microsoft announces a voluntary buyout to 60,000 Employees

An internal memo from Microsoft revealed the details of a voluntary buyout within the company. Business Insider provided details about this new initiative, which will affect approximately 60,000 eligible employees (about a quarter of the total workforce).

According to Chief Human Resources Officer Amy Coleman, this is a « way to align our workforce with evolving needs » across the American company’s various divisions. The goal is also to expedite the departure of employees who envision their future outside of Microsoft. The plan applies to nearly all levels, up to the vice president level.

Here is an excerpt from the internal memo.

« Today, we are launching a new voluntary separation program (VSP) for eligible employees in participating organizations. This program allows eligible employees who are considering a future outside the company to make that transition now, with support. It also provides participating organizations with an additional way to adjust their workforce to meet their evolving needs.

The voluntary separation offer reflects an important aspect of our evolution in change management: providing greater flexibility and, where possible, more opportunities for employees to shape their professional futures. This initiative builds on lessons learned from the voluntary separation program implemented earlier this year.

This offer is available to eligible employees on participating teams in Canada, India, the United Kingdom, and the United States at level 70 and below. This time-limited voluntary separation program allows eligible individuals to leave Microsoft with financial support and resources to help them plan their careers. Some organizations are offering this program; others are not. Participation varies based on each company’s priorities, customer commitments, and staffing needs.

Eligible employees will receive an email in the coming hours containing a link to the details of their voluntary separation offer.

The voluntary separation offer is a new initiative for us. We will learn from this experience. At the same time, we will continue to help our employees focus on the most important tasks, develop new skills, and, where appropriate, find new opportunities within Microsoft. There is no one-size-fits-all solution that works for every team or every employee. Here are a few examples of how we’re working to address the company’s diverse needs while continuing to provide our employees with opportunities for growth and contribution.

I am committed to continuing to provide clarity, to listen and learn, and to constantly improve.

Thank you for everything you continue to do for our customers, for Microsoft, and for everyone else. »
