The Mass Effect game we’ll never get our hands on has been the talk of the town since BioWare’s closure this week. This installment, titled Mass Effect: Universe, even had a trailer leaked.
Now, a certain Dantics is sharing details about the project’s storyline. He claims to have been a member of the “Mass Effect Council.” His role was to provide feedback to the developers during the game’s production.
Let’s start with the story of Mass Effect: Universe, which took place 600 years after the Great War against the Reapers. The player would take on the role of a customizable N7 agent described as a "cross between John Wick and James Bond". Shepard’s legacy would have been preserved regardless of the chosen ending, and the galaxy was to be divided into three major factions. The Geth were emerging as a third superpower after establishing megastructures.
Otherwise, a galactic Cold War was to serve as the game’s backdrop, with an enemy lurking in the shadows to be confronted. Connections between the Milky Way and Andromeda were central to the story, since the events of Mass Effect: Universe and Mass Effect: Andromeda took place almost simultaneously. Our avatar also benefited from experimental technology implanted within them as a unique distinguishing feature compared to other characters.
In terms of gameplay, hacking and environmental manipulation were central, as were the ability to see through walls, identify systems, and trigger traps remotely. The missions followed the format of those in the trilogy, but with a dose of Hitman-style freedom in how to accomplish objectives. What's more, there were brutal executions, tense relationshipts between teammates, and romance wasn't being sanitised.
In short, it was supposed to be a game for fans and it looked "incredible" according to Dantics.
