Tim Sweeney almost rejoiced at the closure of Looking Glass Studios in 2000

Following his recent comments on generative artificial intelligence, Tim Sweeney is facing a new controversy. This one is rather unusual, as it refers to something written by the CEO of Epic Games more than 26 years ago.

Sweeney was reacting to the closure of Looking Glass Studios in May 2000. The studio was known for the Thief franchise, as well as System Shock and Ultima Underworld. At the time, while he was still just a developer, Sweeney spoke of the company’s demise with a certain indifference. For him, it wasn’t a sad day, but an "economically realistic day". He added that, in his opinion, studios that went bankrupt deserved to close.

In his message, he explained that "Looking Glass spent lots of money making innovative games that never sold." Finally, the Epic CEO even went so far as to practically rejoice at the closure, explaining that "dinosaurs die, but the way is cleared for cooler life forms to evolve."

This only serves to further tarnish the reputation of this highly controversial figure in the gaming industry.
