Sony appears to be pulling out of the Blu-ray player market

While this rumor doesn’t seem to directly affect the video game industry, it could very well be indirectly linked to it. Indeed, after confirming that it would stop producing PlayStation discs in January 2028, Sony may be pulling out of another area.

The Japanese blog Kunkoku, which is also a Sony-authorized retailer, reported that the Japanese giant has ceased production of its latest UHD Blu-ray player: the UBP-X700/K model. This model is now listed as out of stock on the brand’s official web.

"Sony ends shipments of Ultra HD Blu-ray player UBP-X700/K. Following the end of Blu-ray recorder sales and the announcement that PlayStation game disc production will cease, the PS5 will be Sony's only UHD Blu-ray player in Japan."

As stated in the message, the PS5 is now the only Blu-ray player Sony has on the market. It does, however, have limitations, such as a lack of Dolby Vision compatibility. By ceasing production of PlayStation discs in just over a year, the Japanese giant is expected to withdraw almost entirely from the Blu-ray sector.
