Death Stranding 2 reportedly sold only 2.5 million copies

We may now know one of the reasons that led Sony to end its partnership with Hideo Kojima on Physint. Released in June 2025 on PS5 and then in March 2026 on PC, Death Stranding 2 appears to have been a commercial failure.
Alinea Analytics reports that the sequel sold approximately 2.5 million units worldwide. The PS5 accounted for 1.8 million copies (including 1 million in the first two months), compared to just 700,000 on PC (550,000 in the first two months). Death Stranding 2 has thus generated $170 million since its release. Various promotional campaigns were not particularly successful.
Meanwhile, the original Death Stranding sold 5 million copies and generated $243 million (71% on PlayStation, 25% on Steam, and 4% on Xbox). Thus, despite its clear critical success, the Death Stranding franchise performs much less well commercially.
