Square Enix patent suggests players may soon be able to train NPCs

The Japanese publisher may soon be introducing a revolutionary system into its games. A recent patent filed by Square Enix suggests the possibility of training NPCs and modifying their behavior through specific in-game activities.

This would add depth and immersion to the games concerned. Characters will, for example, be able to grow stronger, acquire skills or be affected by physical changes. They may also approach each confrontation differently, depending on the knowledge they have acquired.

Any license could accommodate this feature, even Final Fantasy. Of course, since we're only talking about a patent, there's nothing to say at present that it will come to fruition in any concrete way.
