The European Union warns that it cannot force Sony to release games on physical discs
, by Thibaut
While some politicians have tried to distinguish themselves by siding with gamers protesting PlayStation’s move away from physical media, they will likely be unable to do anything about it.
This is according to a statement made by Michael McGrath, the European Commissioner for Consumer Protection. He addressed reporters at the European Parliament in Strasbourg this week.
« It all comes down to commercial and contractual freedoms, and companies are free to offer games and services in whatever way they deem appropriate, provided that consumer rights are fully protected in accordance with national and European law. »
The European Commission had already rejected the « Stop Killing Games » movement, which was calling for measures to prevent certain games from being discontinued by their publishers. At the time, the Commission cited copyright and intellectual property rights, which belong solely to the companies.
