Microsoft considered buying Square Enix

It comes as no surprise to learn that Microsoft had set its sights on acquiring another big publisher. Thanks to some documents revealed during the FTC hearing for the takeover of Activision Blizzard, the American firm already explained that it had considered acquiring Bungie or SEGA.

Today, in the same context, we learn that Microsoft also thought of buying Square Enix. A merger that would have solidified Xbox's presence on the Asian market and boosted its Game Pass offering. The multinational even saw Square Enix as a partner of choice for developing its offering on mobile devices, with a kind of Game Pass for smartphones and tablets.

As of today, we don't know what stage the discussions concerning this hypothetical takeover reached.
