Nicolas Doucet: the man behind Astro, the new PlayStation mascot

Throughout its history, PlayStation has seen many iconic characters become mascots in the eyes of gamers around the world. While the era of Sony's first console was marked by Crash Bandicoot, then, a few years later on PlayStation 2, by Jak & Daxter and Ratchet & Clank, the current console—namely PlayStation 5—sees a new character take this prominent place.

The journey of a man as talented as he is discreet

This little robot named Astro is managed by Team Asobi, whose father is none other than the man we are interested in today: Nicolas Doucet. A personality in the gaming world who has long remained in the shadows, discreet for nearly 25 years, even though he made his debut in the industry in 2001.

Before stepping into the spotlight and giving a series of international interviews following the success of Astro Bot—released in 2024 on PlayStation 5 and winner of the coveted GOTY (Game of the Year) award at the latest Game Awards—Nicolas Doucet already had a wealth of experience in the industry.

In 2002, he took on the role of Associate Producer on games such as Bionicle: Matoran Adventures on Game Boy Advance, then Bionicle in 2003 on PlayStation 2. The Frenchman, now 47, made his name between 2005 and 2008 as producer on Sony's EyeToy franchise.

His adventure with the EyeToy camera

For the younger ones among us, a quick reminder is in order: the EyeToy camera, launched in 2003 on PlayStation 2, was a device capable of capturing your movements to control certain games. It was an innovation at the time, a precursor to mainstream motion gaming.

Among the many experiences developed around this camera, EyeToy: Play 3 and EyeToy: Play Sports bear his signature. The concept quickly won over gamers: more than a million copies were sold in Europe, proof of the public's appetite for these new forms of interaction—a phenomenon later confirmed by the arrival of Nintendo's Wii.

The Astro saga begins!

After a quiet decade, Nicolas Doucet made a strong comeback in 2018 with Astro Bot: Rescue Mission on PlayStation 4. As project director, he introduced the general public to this endearing little robot while accompanying the launch of PlayStation VR.

PlayStation's confidence in him was clear: despite the niche nature of VR, the project was carried out with rigor, passion, and creativity. In just 18 months, he and a small team of about 20 people delivered a game that was praised by critics and gamers alike.

In 2020, he was Studio Director on the remake of Demon’s Souls, but also at the helm of Astro’s Playroom, pre-installed on all PlayStation 5 consoles. Usually, this type of game serves mainly as a technical showcase and attracts little attention. But this time, it’s different.

Yes, Astro's Playroom is indeed a technical demo—designed to showcase the capabilities of the DualSense and the inner workings of the PS5—but it's also a real platform game, complete, polished, fun, and deeply rooted in the PlayStation DNA.

Astro, a mascot that finally takes flight

But Nicolas Doucet doesn't intend to stop there. He wants to take Astro — admittedly the PS5 mascot — into new spheres. This has been achieved with Astro Bot, launched in 2024.

From the very first announcements, the public showed a strong attachment to this cute and funny little robot. Children and adults alike identify with this universal character, propelled into a colorful and technically masterful universe that takes full advantage of the console's features.

The game doesn't revolutionize the genre, but what it does, it does extremely well: smooth mechanics, family-friendly accessibility, and more challenging bonus levels for those who love a challenge. Above all, Astro Bot is a true declaration of love for video games, peppered with references to dozens of cult franchises. Robots dressed up as Kratos, Nathan Drake, Aloy, Cloud, and Snake pay homage to a history that PlayStation wants to convey with lightheartedness and pride.

Thanks to Astro, Nicolas Doucet has established himself as one of the major creators in today's video game scene. Humble, talented, and passionate, he represents a new generation of creators capable of offering touching, accessible, and high-quality experiences.

And one thing is certain: he hasn't said his last word yet. We are all waiting eagerly his next games.
