Steam release of Dolphin blocked by Nintendo
, by Thibaut
Dolphin has garnered quite a reputation online, as it’s capable of playing a great deal of titles from de Wii and Gamecube catalogs on PC. Such is its success that the software’s developers had announced a Steam version coming later this year. Alas, it seems that it’s not going to happen…
In a press release published on the emulator’s official website, the creators have announced that Nintendo has blocked Dolphin’s launch on Valve’s store.
“It is with much disappointment that we have to announce that the Dolphin on Steam release has been indefinitely postponed. We were notified by Valve that Nintendo has issued a cease and desist citing the DMCA against Dolphin’s Steam page, and have removed Dolphin from Steam until the matter is settled. We are currently investigating our options and will have a more in-depth response in the near future”.
The Japanese giant has also commented on the matter in order to explain its decision. On [Kotaku] (https://kotaku.com/nintendo-gamecube-wii-emulator-dolphin-valve-piracy-1850482929), the Japanese brand made the following statement.
“Nintendo is committed to protecting the hard work and creativity of video game engineers and developers. This emulator illegally circumvents Nintendo’s protection measures and runs illegal copies of games. Using illegal emulators or illegal copies of games harms development and ultimately stifles innovation. Nintendo respects the intellectual property of other companies, and in turn expects others to do the same”.
