Mario celebrates his 40th birthday in Japan
, by Thibaut
This September 13, 2025, our beloved Mario will celebrate his 40th birthday. Super Mario Bros., the first game in the franchise, was released on September 13, 1985, on the NES in Japan.
Throughout the year, Nintendo has planned celebrations and, of course, new releases for this major event. For example, we will be treated to the Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 collection on October 2 for Switch. Mario Tennis Fever will follow on February 12, 2026, on Switch 2, and Yoshi and the Mysterious Book next spring. At the same time, Super Mario Bros. Wonder will get a Switch 2 version with new content.
However, the highlight of the show will obviously be the Super Mario Galaxy movie. In addition to the video game, Nintendo will be selling a replica of the flower from Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which will even be able to talk.
Finally, Nintendo is encouraging players to (re)immerse themselves in several games from the franchise. Mario Kart World, Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, Luigi's Mansion 3, Princess Peach Showtime!, and of course Super Mario Bros. Wonder are all on the list.
Let's hope for more announcements and releases to come during this 40th anniversary.
