Tim Sweeney says that Unreal Engine 5 games lagging are because of the devs

While Unreal Engine 5 has established itself as the benchmark engine for the biggest games of recent years, it isn't without its fair share of criticisms. Due to its technical requirements, the engine can cause slowdowns on the less powerful devices.

For Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games and creator of the first version of Unreal Engine, the fault lies with the developers. During a roundtable discussion, Sweeney criticized studios for focusing too much on the most powerful machines and only optimizing their creations at the end of development.

"The main reason why games based on Unreal Engine 5 don't run properly on certain PCs or GPUs is the development process. Many developers design games for high-end hardware, then optimize and test them on less powerful devices in the final stages of development.

"Of course, optimization is by no means an easy task; it's a real challenge. Ideally, optimization should be implemented at the beginning of development, before large-scale content construction begins. We are preparing two major solutions to address this issue."

Epic intends to offer automated optimization solutions to make the process faster and simpler. The company also wants to strengthen developer training in the field of optimization.
