The upcoming Final Fantasy games may not be numbered

When the first installment of a saga dates back to 1987, one can imagine that the episodes have continued over the years. This is especially true for the Final Fantasy franchise, with its sixteenth chapter set to be released in June. And, of course, we can't forget the numerous spin-offs that have emerged.

In an effort to not overwhelm new players with an ever-increasing number (imagine Final Fantasy XXV!), Square Enix has considered dropping the numbering system in favor of a more descriptive title. This was stated by producer Naoki Yoshida in an interview with GQ this week.

*"I have discussed this with my superiors. It may be time to remove the numbers from the title. For example, you have Final Fantasy 14. A new player comes along and wonders why they should play Final Fantasy 14 when 16 is already out. Why not simply call it Final Fantasy Online, removing the number, which would make the game easier to understand?

Whether Final Fantasy 17 or Final Fantasy 18 has a number or not, it is up to the developers and those overseeing the branding to decide!"*
