Gears of War: Reloaded, an iconic Xbox IP coming to PlayStation
, by Quentin
Quite an event in the world of video games is set to take place on August 26. That's the day when Gears of War: Reloaded, a remaster of the very first entry on the Microsoft's iconic franchise, is coming out.
Gears of War comes to be and leaves its mark on the Xbox 360 era
It made the Xbox 360's generation even greater with an original trilogy and a spin-off called Gears of War: Judgment, developed by Epic Games, which needs no introduction. A true technological showcase back in the day, with Unreal Engine working wonders and easily demonstrating the technical capabilities of the machine.
But Gears of War is not just that, as fans of the series will readily agree. It's endless gunfights, heavy but incredibly exhilarating gameplay, and powerful, memorable moments throughout all the games.
Because even if finesse isn't what characterizes the franchise the most, the games sometimes offered several moments of grace that left a lasting impression. Gears of War has enjoyed critical and commercial success throughout its lifetime and continues to be part of the gaming landscape today, with a new episode in the works, Gears of War: E-Day, coming 2026.
It's also about sharing adventures cooperatively, making for a thrilling experience with a friend or even strangers during multiplayer sessions with game modes such as Horde. A real bonus, giving the game immense replay value.
Epic Games moves on and leaves the field to The Coalition
After doing an excellent job on the first trilogy and the spin-off, Epic Games is hanging up its gloves and leaving the series in good hands with The Coalition, who will be working on Gears of War 4 and Gears 5. These episodes were very well received by the specialized press and gamers, but may lack the brilliance of the first installments.
However, The Coalition knows and masters the recipe, proving that it is possible to take over a franchise without causing a stir. In fact, they have the daunting task of remastering the first cult episode, the one that laid the foundations for the universe and brought together the most memorable characters.
The pressure is all the greater as they will be responsible for introducing this world to PlayStation players, who may not have had the opportunity to discover it before. This is also a complex exercise, given that it is the studio's first game to be ported to a competing console.
Even though it's just a simple remaster, it needs to be optimized to the max to find its way into Sony consumers' living rooms and meet their expectations in terms of optimization and 4K facelift.
There's also a surprise in store, with the familiar single-player mode, but also it featuring a multiplayer mode that is sure to bring back many memories for many of us.
Microsoft continues to offer its flagship games on PlayStation
Although this is a first for Gears of War, it is no longer unusual for Microsoft to bring its exclusives to Sony's console. They have already done so with the excellent Indiana Jones and the Ancient Circle, and more recently with Forza Horizon 5. In a few months, it will be Senua's Saga: Hellblade II's turn to arrive.
This multiplatform publishing approach is a lifesaver, given the sales success it brings to the company. It must be said that there are fewer players on the Xbox side, but they stand to gain from being discovered by a larger number of players on the PlayStation 5.
On the Sony side, we have strong IPs such as Helldivers 2 finding its way to Xbox Series X/S on August 26, 2025.
As for Gears of War: Reloaded, it will be released on the same day on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
