The CMA expresses its disagreement with the European Union's choice regarding the acquisition of Activision Blizzard

Microsoft made progress this week. The European Commission has decided to give the green light for the acquisition of the Activision Blizzard King group. This decision goes against the one made by the CMA. Indeed, the British regulator had opposed the merger.

In a statement, Sarah Cardell, the president of the CMA, reacted to the European Union's choice.

*"The British, American, and European competition authorities are unanimous in their view that this merger would harm competition in the cloud gaming sector. The CMA has concluded that cloud gaming should continue to be a free and competitive market to stimulate innovation and choice in this rapidly evolving sector.

Microsoft's proposals, accepted today by the European Commission, would allow Microsoft to dictate the terms of this market for the next ten years. This would replace a free, open, and competitive market with a market subject to permanent regulation of the games sold by Microsoft, the platforms on which it sells them, and the terms of sale.

This is one of the reasons why the independent panel of the CMA rejected Microsoft's proposals and prevented this agreement. Although we recognize and respect that the European Commission has the right to have a different viewpoint, the CMA stands by its decision."*
