Resident Evil Requiem's director thinks Leon isn't suited for the horror genre

Resident Evil Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi has said that Leon Kennedy is “not suited to horror”, confusing fans about his presence in the game.

Announced at Summer Game Fest 2025, Resident Evil Requiem was detailed yesterday during the Capcom Spotlight. Nakanishi explained that he had envisioned Leon as a protagonist, but that his action hero profile made it difficult to create a true horror game.

According to him, Leon would not react credibly to frightening everyday elements, which in turn would limit the horror aspect. That's why the game will feature a new heroine: FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft.

Introverted and easily frightened, she embodies a more vulnerable approach to horror, while still being able to defend herself and rationally analyze situations.

However, according to leaker DuskGolem, Leon is the real protagonist of the game. He won't appear until later in the story, but will be more playable than Grace, a fact that should be gradually confirmed by the game's future news.
