A mod lets you use FSR 4 on an RX 7000 GPU

While AMD has made FSR 4 official with RDNA4 cards, this now AI-based scaling technology remains exclusive to the Radeon RX 9000. There is no official support for RDNA3 GPUs, such as the RX 7000, as of now.

However, a modder under the pseudonym Virtual-Cobbler-9930 has managed to force FSR 4 activation on an RX 7900 XT, notably in Cyberpunk 2077. Bypassing the lack of official FSR 3.1 integration in the game, he used the OptiScaler tool to manually inject FSR 4 and activate a specific command. This command simulates certain hardware instructions absent from RDNA3, originally intended for RDNA4.

The result: improved image quality, but a noticeable drop in performance. In Cyberpunk 2077, fps dropped from 85 to 56 with the FSR Quality preset. A similar finding was observed in Oblivion Remastered, with fewer visual artifacts but a drop in performance estimated at between 20 and 30%.

This experiment suggests that FSR 4 could technically work on RDNA3, but its resource cost may justify the lack of official support... at least for now.
