A report states that Nintendo seems to favor Japanese retailers' margins

On the eve of the Switch 2's launch, Bloomberg decided to drop an interesting piece of information about an alleged Nintendo business practice in Japan.

According to the article, the Japanese company is taking the unusual step of setting wholesale prices itself, so that retailers in the country can achieve higher margins. Thanks to this procedure, the gross margin on each Switch 2 sale would rise to 5%, compared with 2% under normal circumstances.

In simple terms, such a measure would be used to favor national retailers and allow the machine to benefit from greater in-store exposure. It should be remembered that the Switch 2 will benefit from an exclusively Japanese version, which retails for just ¥49,980, or around €306. The manufacturer has therefore gone to great lengths to sell the machine in its native country.

But something even more astonishing happened after this article was published. Nintendo actually refuted this on social networks.

"On June 2, 2025 (JST), a news report related to the wholesale price of Nintendo Switch 2 in the Japanese market was published. We want to clarify that this report is not true. Nintendo does not disclose any information regarding business conditions with distribution and retail partners."

Bloomberg has yet to fix this article. Nintendo shares fell by 2.2% on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Monday.
