At first, Resident Evil 9 was going to be an open-world multiplayer game

According to new information shared by a leaker, when Resident Evil 9 first started development, back in 2017, it was as an open-world multiplayer game, set on a fictional island inspired by Singapore featuring Leon and Jill.

This initial concept was abandoned after the launch of Resident Evil Village in 2021, when Capcom decided to reboot the project. Leon would, however, remain the main character in the current version.

The leaker also states that the release is scheduled for 2026, and that an announcement could be made this year. The game would still use the RE Engine, in an open-world environment. Multiplayer, on the other hand, would have been scrapped.
