Housemarque (Returnal) does not wish to make GAAS

Since it's all the rage nowadays, and Sony has put a lot of emphasis on this area, we wondered whether Housemarque might turn to the famous live service games.

Ilari Kuittinen, CEO of the Finnish studio responsible for the excellent Returnal, was asked about this by Eurogamer, and his answer was quite clear: he has no intention of creating a free-to-play or service game. The company prefers to focus on "premium games".

For Kuittinen, a video game is like a film or a series. It is consumed over a period of time before the player moves on to something else.

"Our philosophy is that [our games] represent an experience for a certain period of your life, and it doesn't matter if it lasts a few days, or a few weeks. And I think that's really cool. You don't have to spend the rest of your free time with our games [...] You get it, you get something out of it. You might come back to it, but you don't have to play it all your life."

Housemarque is currently working on Saros, due out in 2026 for PS5.
