Switch virtual game cards no longer let you play online the same game on two consoles
, by Thibaut
Nintendo has introduced the Virtual Game Card system via Switch update 20.0.0 today. This lets you share games and DLC between two consoles linked to the same account.
Alas, this new feature has a really bad consequence. Previously, Switch games purchased from the main console could be played via any account connected to that same device. We also had the option of installing any game on a secondary console in order to play it, which in the end let two people to play the same title online simultaneously, without having to checkout a second time.
Unfortunately, with the advent of virtual game cards came the abolition of primary and secondary consoles. And just like a physical card, the virtual one can also only be launched on one console at a time.
To get around this, you need to activate the online license settings option and switch the console with the virtual card to airplane mode. This lets the second Switch load de game with the lonline license. Of course, this won't let you play online with another person playing that same game.
