Before Activision Blizzard, Microsoft tried to acquire another mobile game publisher
, by Thibaut
What if Activision Blizzard had ultimately been Microsoft's second choice? While the acquisition has just been blocked by the UK competition authority (CMA), an intriguing piece of information has emerged during this case. In its 418-page report explaining its decision, the CMA mentions that the US manufacturer first wanted to acquire another company.
"[...] Microsoft could acquire 'compelling content and experience with player engagement and acquisition' by acquiring another mobile game publisher. This appears to have been Microsoft's strategy - it attempted to purchase [redacted] in [redacted], and said [redacted]."
Of course, the document does not disclose the identity of the publisher Microsoft wanted to acquire. However, it clearly shows that the multinational's goal is to establish itself strongly and sustainably in the mobile gaming market.
