The Ghost of Yotei devs explain why they went with a female main character
, by Quentin
In an interview with Variety, Jason Connell and Nate Fox, co-creative directors of Ghost of Yotei, explain why the game's main character will be a woman.
They say they want to offer a sequel that remains close to the first game, all while bringing something new to the table. The choice of a female protagonist is part of this logic, in line with a story centered on an outsider character.
For Connell, the game world is “dangerous”, which makes this type of character interesting. The heroine doesn't seem threatening at first, but she's on a quest for revenge.
Over the course of the story, she will be known as The Onryō, a vengeful spirit from Japanese folklore. Connell points out that this type of figure is traditionally female, which is why Atsu was chosen.
