Because of the redundancies, no one was able to get the Life is Strange: Double Exposure award at GDC

Last December, Deck Nine Games was hit by a wave of layoffs after the release of Life is Strange: Double Exposure. Square Enix went on to explain that the game was a commercial failure.

However it was nominated in the category of games with a strong social impact at the GDC Awards this week, even winning it. Alas, no one came to collect the award on stage at the event. The reason? Almost the entire creative team was laid off, and none of the developers knew about the nomination.

This is what Elizabeth Ballou (narrative designer) has explained on social networks.

"It’s fitting that nobody was there to accept the GDCA award that Double Exposure won, because we all got laid off lol. A bunch of us are at GDC, but we didn’t know we were even nominated so nobody was prepared to accept anything."
