A 12-pin connector has melted on an RTX 5090
, by Quentin
A user has reported having getting a connector melted with an RTX 5090 Founders Edition, affecting both the graphics card and the power cable.
He explained on Reddit that he was using a third-party 12VHPWR cable from Moddiy with an ASUS Loki SFX-L power supply. During a session of Battlefield V, his card was consuming around 500-520W. After smelling something burning, he turned off his PC, but the connectors were already damaged. This 12VHPWR had already caused incidents on the RTX 4090, leading to the introduction of the 12V-2x6, a connector designed to fix all these problems. The user claims that his cable was correctly inserted, but it's possible that the problem stems from poor contact, a problem that has already ocurred with this type of connector.
Using an unofficial cable could make it difficult to obtain warranty support. NVIDIA recommends using the connector supplied with the card to avoid this kind of risk. Other reports of damaged RTX 50 boards have been making the rounds, and NVIDIA is currently investigating these issues.
