Sony didn't greenlight a sequel to The Order 1886 because of its mixed reviews

This February 20 will mark the 10th anniversary of The Order 1886 for PS4. Developed by Ready At Dawn, this exclusive sadly didn't live up to expectations, and got a Metacritic average of just a meager 63%.

According to studio co-founder Andrea Pessino, it was these low scores that made Sony refuse a sequel.

"I don’t think it was the sales, I think it was the critical reception, that’s the thing. Sony is a very proud group and rightfully so, and the critical reception, if it had even been just in the 70s, we would have had the sequel, I’m convinced. Just a few points more and it would have been OK."

Alas, the Japanese company was aiming for a specific launch date and refused to delay it. According to Pessino, a lot of content had to be removed from the game to meet these tight deadlines, and even part of the story got cut from the final game.

"We needed another year, that’s the reality. We needed at least one more year, we didn’t get it, so we were like, cut, cut, cut."

Andrea Pessino believes that the sequel to The Order 1886 could have been released in 2018. They wanted it to even have a multiplayer mode. Ready At Dawn was acquired by Meta in 2020 and ony developed VR games until it closed its doors for good last year.
