AMD launches the Ryzen AI Max Strix Halo for AI PCs and workstations

AMD has announced its new Ryzen AI Max Strix Halo processor range, designed for high-end laptops and mobile workstations. Those are based on the Zen 5 architecture and come with RDNA 3.5 GPUs, and offer exceptional performance for demanding AI and intensive graphics workloads.

The flagship model is the Ryzen AI Max+ 395, and feature 16 CPU cores, 32 threads and 40 GPU compute units, all with a boost frequency of up to 5.1 GHz. I features a total cache of 80 MB, a memory bandwitch of 256 GB/s thanks to the LPDDR5x and an IA XDNA 2 engine offering 50 TOPS. The configurable power consumption ranges from 45 W to 120 W.

This range also includes the Ryzen AI Max 390 (12 cores), Max 385 (8 cores) and Max Pro 380 (6 cores), all with diverse configurations available to suit different needs. These processors boast significant performance gains over Intel Lunar Lake and Apple M4 Pro, specially in AI, where the Max+ 395 outperforms the NVIDIA RTX 4090 with a 87% lower power consumption.

All available in the first half of 2025, these APUs will be featured in devices such as the ZBook Ultra G1A and ASUS ROG Flow Z13, with further OEM options to come. This new generation of chipsets should establish AMD as a market leader when it comes to AI-optimized PCs.
