Sony started working on the PS5 Pro before launching the PS5.

Since its reveal on September 10th, the PS5 Pro has been a hot topic. Hideaki Nishino, co-CEO of PlayStation, talked about its design process in an interview with Variety.

During the interview, Nishino revealed that Sony's teams had already started working on the console at a very early stage.

"So we started working on PS5 Pro even before PS5 launches — it was another five-year project for us. So there was a conversation around whether we wanted to do another Pro or not. "

"The main thing was, there are technologies we can grow up in three years time or five years time. The innovation and technology advancement is quicker in a modern world. Phones are updating every year, PCs are updating every year."

"I don’t think we’d go every year updates, but there are things we can package together to bring the greatest things into game console segment range. So that’s the vision."

Nishino also revealed that when the PS4 and PS4 Pro were sold at the same time, the PS4 pro accounted for 20% of total sales. A significant amount, despite the fact that its price was much lower than the PS5 Pro.
